The following information is from DSS and DHEC. The information is intended to help keep centers and parents updated concerning the H1N1 virus. You may use the information as you feel will best serve your center and families. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office.
The novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) has continued to affect our state and has been declared a worldwide pandemic. We need
your help to prevent the spread of flu among our children.
The novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) spreads the same way that regular seasonal flu viruses spread, mainly through the coughs
and sneezes of people who are sick with the flu. It also spreads by touching contaminated objects and then touching your
eyes, nose or mouth.
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot each year. We expect that a vaccine to fight the novel H1N1 flu
(swine flu) will be available later this year. Please watch for its availability and discuss vaccination for you and your
family with your health care provider.
You can also help slow the spread of flu by doing the following:
•
Talk with your child about hand washing. Frequent hand washing with soap and warm water helps remove virusesand other germs. Children should wash their hands for about 20 seconds or as long as it takes to sing the “Happy
Birthday” song twice.
•
Teach your child to cover her or his mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and then to throwthe tissue away. Your child can cough or sneeze into his or her upper sleeve if no tissue is handy. Wash hands
afterward.
•
Encourage your child to eat healthy foods, exercise, and get plenty of rest.•
Keep your child home if he or she has a fever of 100oF or higher with a cough or sore throat for which there is noknown cause. Call your child’s school or childcare provider and tell them your child’s symptoms. In most cases,
your child can return after he or she has been fever free for at least 24 hours
without taking fever-reducingmedications.
•
Make sure the school or childcare provider has a way to reach you. Children who become ill with flu-likesymptoms at school or with a childcare provider must be sent home.
We greatly appreciate your help and understanding. We will do our best to keep schools and childcare programs open. To
help us do this, we encourage you to review the childcare and school exclusion lists on our Web site:
www.scdhec.gov/health/disease/exclusion.htm
. They list more information about when a child should be kept home.Families should have plans in the event that schools and childcare programs must be closed.
Information on the novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) continues to change quickly. We will do our best to keep you informed.
Together we can slow the spread of flu. If you have questions about the novel H1N1 flu (swine flu), please call 211 or
your local public health department.
Updated Exclusion Criteria for Influenza / Influenza-Like Illnesses
Amendment to the Official List of Conditions Requiring Exclusion from School for 2009-2010 and the Official List of Conditions Requiring Exclusion from Out-of-Home Childcare Settings for 2009-2010, effective August 28, 2009
The exclusion and reporting criteria for influenza / influenza-like illnesses(ILI)
1 outlined in this document supersede those noted in the June 2009 revisions to the Official List of Conditions Requiring Exclusion from School for 2009-2010 and the Official List of Conditions Requiring Exclusion from Out-of-Home Childcare Settings for 2009-2010.1
ILI is defined as an oral temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more with a cough and/or sore throat for which there is no other known cause besides the flu or an influenza-like illness.2
An ill person has signs of a fever if he or she feels warmer than usual to the touch, has a flushed appearance, or is sweating or shivering.3
Report suspected outbreaks and clusters of diseases or symptoms that would not be reportable as single cases. An "outbreak" in a school is defined as an excess number of cases or symptoms over the expected occurrence of disease within a school or classroom or group.4
Until DHEC’s web-based surveillance system is available, schools should complete paper-based ILI reporting forms daily and submit them to their district surveillance coordinator. District surveillance coordinators should review the information and assure that follow-up has occurred if the data suggests an outbreak at a school. Private schools should complete the paper-based reporting forms and maintain the information at the school level. ILI-reporting and tracking forms are available from the August 21, 2009 DHEC Health Advisory: Interim Guidance for Nonresidential K-12 School Responses to Influenza during the 2009-2010 School Year, available from this page: http://www.dhec.sc.gov/health/disease/han/notifications.htm.

A TEACHERS STORY
By: Jessica Walls In this section we will learn about our teachers and thier background. My first interview was with Mr. Jackson, our principal. This is Mr. Jackson’s 5th year as principal at FICS. From the time Mr. Jackson was in high school playing basketball, he always wanted to coach, teach, and work with kids. He told me he’s never really wanted to do anything else and we can clearly tell by his devotion and work he puts into his job. Mr. Jackson has now been teaching and ministering to kids for 19 years. He had his own business for 5 years until he decided to be a part of the ministry here at FICS as principal. He said the part he loves most is working with the students here. Mr. Jackson also would like to share some of his testimony; his dad is a Baptist Preacher, so he grew up in church, accepted Christ at age seven and has walked with the Lord since. His life verse is Hebrew 12: 1-2 “Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith who the joy set before him endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” He uses this as a reminder to keep his eyes on God and headed in the right direction. To conclude Mr. Jackson would like to welcome our veteran students back as well as the new students and he is looking forward to a wonderful new school year.

A TEACHERS STORY

This week I interviewed Mrs. Diemer. She shared some interesting things with me about herself. One of the interesting things she told me was, she is presently in school and will be graduating in December for her B.S. She also told me that she absolutely loves working with children, and she had originally intended to be a nurse. She decided nursing school wasn’t for her and attempted to go into accounting. She also decided that accounting wasn’t for her either. Then she became a preschool teacher at Flamingo Road Christian School in Florida.
She has now been teaching for eleven years, and has been in the ministry for about eight. She teaches K4 and K5, but she said she loves teaching and getting involved with children of all ages.
I also asked Mrs. Diemer about her testimony. She said she was saved at age twelve, and she has always been involved in Christian schools and in church. One of her life verses is Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he shall not depart from it.” Mrs. Diemer said she uses this verse in her classroom everyday to help plant a seed in the children’s minds of how important it is to teach others about Christ. The last thing she would like to say is to all the students, “this is the beginning of a new year and a clean slate, so don’t let your past define your present and start the new year with a new attitude.”

This week’s interview is with our volleyball coach, Mrs. Atwood. Teaching has been a life long dream for Mrs. Atwood. She has always wanted to work with kids and coach. She has now been teaching and involved in ministry through the school for 4 years. Mrs. Atwood is also currently working for her second masters in psychology. She first started working in a preschool and went on from there. Mrs. Atwood absolutely loves kids. Mrs. Atwood is also a foster parent. She’s had 12 foster kids in this past year. She is currently fostering two kids, Deondre and a little girl named Trinity along with her two other kids named Caleigh and Trace. Mrs. Atwood grew up in a Christian home and attended a Baptist church. She was saved at age 9 and was always involved with her youth group but she really became close with God when she turned 17 and her mom became sick with cancer. Her mom died shortly after her junior year in school. God was with her through it all and she has remained close to him since. Her life verse is Phil. 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She uses this every day to give her strength and courage to go through her life. Mrs. Atwood is truly happy with her life and enjoys every moment, from being with her kids, to teaching, to her role as our volleyball coach. With that said, Mrs. Atwood truly is a wonderful person and truly is one of Gods children, and we are glad to have her here at F.I.C.S.

This week I had the privilege of interviewing Ms. VanHouten. She is an amazing lady and I enjoyed speaking with her. Ms. VanHouten said that teaching wasn’t her original dream, but when she took a class in high school on elementary education she fell in love with the idea. She has now been teaching for 6 years. Ms. VanHouten also has some other really cool jobs; she is a travel agent, motivational speaker, and an adult teacher. She says the best part of her job is when you have a child who doesn’t understand something and then you see that “Oh I get it now” look on their face. Even though Ms.VanHouten has all these cool jobs now, she used to be a stay at home mom where she home schooled her two children, Brittany who graduated from here as valedictorian in 2008 and her son, Nicholas who is in seventh grade and currently attends F.I.C.S. She says her kids are her miracle from God. Ms. VanHouten told me she didn’t grow up in a religious home. When she was in her teens she started realizing something was missing. As a young adult she was saved at age 27, ever since then she has been growing closer to God daily. She also found that she has a passion for teaching high school kids about God because she can relate to a lot of them and can understand thier problems. She dosen’t really have one favorite verse but she does have a saying “In your relationships it should be God, the other person and you.” She says what this means is God should come first in all aspects of your life and noone, not even yourself should be before him. As we’ve seen, Ms. VanHouten loves God and eventually wants to go deeper into ministry and write a bible study for adults. The last thing she would like to say is this, “To all the students and anyone who reads this, no matter what anyone says, never doubt your worth cause in Gods eyes you’re a true miracle”.
Inspirational Scripture of the week:
1 Chronicles 16:29 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

This week, I had a wonderful talk with Mrs. Buchanan and found out some interesting things about her. Mrs. Buchanan has loved kids her entire life and she knows teaching has always been her calling. She has taught for about 34 years. She started in a day care working with after school children, which she did for 10 years, Mrs. Buchanan says her favorite part about her job is that she not only can teach kids in academics but can also share the gospel with them. Even though this has always been her dream she has had other jobs too. She has been in retail and she spent two years as a seal secretary. Mrs. Buchanan was saved at age 7 and has always been very active in her church and just like all Christians she has wondered from her path but has always found her way back home. Her two life verses are Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ he strengthens me.” She uses this to remind her that any obstacle she has, she can face because God is there strengthening her. The other verse is Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” She says this reminds her she doesn’t need drugs or alcohol or anything else to get a high in life because God lifts her up like the verse says and she can do anything as long as God is there. Mrs. Buchanan is a very happy person who always seems to have a smile on her face no matter what and she has a very special task set for her, which is to witness and mentor to kids. She said the best part is when the task has been fulfilled and you get to see the child and all he or she has accomplished for God and know that you had a small part in planting that seed that grew to be the person they have become. Before I close, Mrs. Buchanan would like to say “As long as God is first you can over come anything and any obstacle and that when faced with trials don’t think of them as troubled times but as a time were your faith has a chance to grow stronger.” Well, I think that says it all, Mrs. Buchanan is truly a remarkable woman who absolutely loves God and enjoys life to the fullest in every way.

Just a few Reminders:
*Parents and students are encouraged to visit our school’s website @ ficsfalcons.org. The website is updated on a regular basis. We also have information posted in the Tribune Times “school news” section each week.
*Progrees reports need to be signed by the parent and returned to the school office.
*All visitors on campus will need to report to the school office to sign in and receive a visitor’s pass.
*OFFICE PHONE PROCEDURES
Please do not call the office and ask to speak with your child because we want to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum. Parents are encouraged to take care of all communication with their children before they arrive at school. However, in case of an emergency, school personnel will contact your child with the information as
you request. If students need to make an emergency phone call, they may come to the office to make the call.
*SHINING YOUR LIGHT AT THE BALLGAMES
This is just a simple reminder for parents to remind their children that we need to be at our best in the way we look, act, and support our teams. We have a great opportunity to be a witness for our Savior at such events. Let us strive together to be the best witness we can be! May our “lights” shine always and everywhere, as we never know who may be watching!!
*Attendance/ Tardy Policy
The South Carolina State Law requires that a student must be in attendance a minimum of 170 days of school per year. The 170-day rule will be enforced, except in cases of extended chronic illnesses when certified by a physician and/or absences that are due to an emergency situation approved by the Administrator as excusable.
Excused Absences
Illness or injury that is certified by a doctor’s statement.
Death in the immediate family.
Court or legal proceedings.
School functions or activities.
Unexcused Absences
Willingful absences.
Unacceptable cause absences such as family vacation.
When a student returns to school after being absent, he is required to bring a written excuse to the school office, signed by the parent or guardian. A doctor’s statement must be present for a medical excuse. Students are expected to make up all missed work for any absence. In case of a planned unexcused absence, such as a family trip, the office must be notified in advance in order for missed work to be made up. Students arriving to school later than 11:30 AM will be counted absent for the day. Students leaving prior to 11:30 AM will be counted absent for the day. A student who has an unexcused absence for the day may not participate in extracurricular school activities. Students arriving to school later than 8:00 AM will need to obtain a late pass from the school office. Three unexcused tardies will count as one unexcused absence. A student absent more than the allowed (10) days may be retained for the year, and/or subject to summer school in order to move to the next grade.

A TEACHERS STORY
By: Jessica Walls
Most of our teachers have always wanted to teach or work with kids; however, Mr. Bates is a different story. He originally wanted to be an engineer, then a youth leader. While he was on a mission trip with his youth, he was torturing some of the kids and one of them told him that he would be an awesome teacher and his career went from there. He has now been teaching two years and enjoys every minute of it. Mr. Bates first teaching job was right here at F.I.C.S. Mr. Bates has been a youth pastor for three years and is currently at a church in Travelers Rest. Mr. Bates said that the best part about both jobs is that when you get to watch the kids grow not only in their daily life but in their spirtual lives as well. The following is some of Mr. Bates testimony: He moved around a lot during his childhood because his dad was a minister. Mr. Bates became bitter not only towards his dad but God as well. He came to a point in his life where he said I’m through with You, God it’s my life and I’m going to live it my way. In sixth grade he had to have a four inch screw put in his hip and was diagnosed with cancer. During a routine checkup for the cancer the doctors realized he had been healed. He knew God was the only one who could heal him and from that point on, he realized that God was the only one who could control his life and chose to walk the path that God had set for him. Mr. Bates life verse is Phillipians 3:12-14: “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Bretheren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” He says this reminds him to keep going forward and to leave the past in the past because no matter what we do God will always see us the same. Mr. Bates would like me to close with these words of wisdom, keep pushing hard and strive to become what God sees you as and what He wants you to be. Mr. Bates is an extremely dedicated man who loves his job and loves God even more and strives to live his life the way God would have him to.

A TEACHERS STORY
By: Tori Sprinkle
This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Ginger. Mrs. Ginger is our FICS lunch director and teachers aide for K-4 and K-5. She has worked here at FICS for 5 years and has been working in Christian schools for 11 years. Mrs. Ginger lives in Enoree SC, with her 3 kids Ike, Heather, and Shawn. Each of her kids has been in a Christian school their whole life. Mrs. Ginger grew up in Newberry, SC with her dad. She was saved at age 20 and says that the Lord has been good to her since. Mrs. Ginger’s life verse is Isaiah 26:3-4. She attends Bethany Baptist Church, and has been there for 8 years. She is very involved in her church. When I asked her favorite part about working at FICS, she said, she loves being involved with the kids. She is grateful that her kids can grow up in a school that reads and involves the word of God in every class.

A TEACHERS STORY
By: Tori Sprinkle
I had the chance this week to talk with Mrs. Stacey Miller. Mrs. Stacey has been with FICS for 4 years. For the last four years she has worked in our school office, but this year she decided that she was ready for a change. She teaches 1st-8th grade P.E., 7th and 8th grade Bible and high school Yearbook. Mrs. Stacey is the wife of our middle and high school teacher, Mr. Miller. She currently lives in Fountian Inn with her husband and
3 kids; Sarah (2nd grade), Johnny (Senior), and Dani (Sophmore). Mrs. Stacey says her favorite part about working at FICS is being able to share God's word with her students, and at the same time being able to see her family all day. Mrs. Stacey was saved at a young age at a Vacation Bible School that her neighbor invited her to. Because she didn't grow up in a christian home, she never fully understood what it meant to be a christian. Mrs. Stacey and Mr. Miller met in high school and knew they were meant to be together after just a few weeks. When Johnny became old enough to go to school, the Miller's put him in a christian school. Johnny came home sharing God's word with her, and at that point she realized that it was time to learn what God had planned for her life. Mrs. Stacey started going to church and decided to rededicate her life to the Lord. From that point on, she put everything she had into serving God. Life hasn't always been easy, but when times get tough, she just remembers a popular verse, Phil. 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Inspirational Scripture of the Week
During this busy Christmas season we all need to take a moment to stop and remember the real reason for the season, it’s not all about the food, the parties, or the gifts even though all of those are great, we need to remember what the Bible tells us in Luke 2: 9-16:
Luke 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. Luke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Luke 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made Luke 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
Let’s focus on the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our prayer is that each of you has a blessed Christmas this year!

Scripture of the Week
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
